For the last few years, Longleat’s premiere winter attraction has been a beautiful festival of lights on the ground surrounding the classic stately home. It takes them all year to prepare and it’s become a hallmark of Christmas travel across southwest England. We love Longleat house – it’s beautiful and rich in history. The Safari park is also a lot of fun. So, the yearly light show is now another way to enjoy the estate. Last year, we happened to be in the area on the second to last day of last year’s light festival in January. This year’s light show begins this weekend. While the theme changes from year to year, I thought it would be fun to share the images I took to give you an idea of what to expect. Just to be clear, you will not see these lights this year – the theme is different this year.
What’s this year’s theme?
This winter, stunning Chinese lanterns will light up Longleat once more as we take you on A Fantastic Voyage! Join us on a thrilling expedition around the world, journeying through time and space with explorers, Harry and Bea, a plucky brother and sister, and their fearless terrier companion, Monty. Marvel as you and our heroes discover wondrous scenes, from the exotic to the glacial, filled with astonishing creatures, magnificent scenery, stunning structures and sensational modes of transportation, as you embark on this epic adventure.
I really wish we would get a chance to see it, but we will miss it this year! So, if you’re in Wiltshire, be sure to stop off at this. Give yourself all day to visit Longleat, there’s a Christmas village set up, you can see the house decorated for Christmas and visit the Safari Park (and eat in the new restaurant). It’s a grand day out.
Check the website for details and you must book ahead and many days are sold out – so plan ahead! If the Longleat press department is reading this – if you send me pictures of this year’s display, I’ll do another post.

Last years theme was fairy tales – so the lights reflect that.
I thought it was incredible that America’s last King planted the tree in the next two pictures. What a piece of living history!
Sorry, this one is blurry… should have taken a second one!
